What Is Zakat? A Complete Guide for Canadian Muslims

Understanding Zakat: The Third Pillar of Islam

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, making it a fundamental act of worship for every Muslim who meets the criteria. The word “Zakat” comes from the Arabic root meaning “to purify” and “to grow.” By giving Zakat, a Muslim purifies their wealth and soul, while helping those in need.

Who Must Pay Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory upon every adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year (Hawl). The Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is calculated based on the value of either:

  • Gold: 87.48 grams (approximately 3 ounces)
  • Silver: 612.36 grams (approximately 21 ounces)

Most scholars recommend using the silver standard, as it results in a lower Nisab threshold, meaning more people are eligible to pay Zakat — thus benefiting more recipients.

How Much Is Zakat?

The standard Zakat rate is 2.5% of your total qualifying wealth. This includes:

  • Cash savings (in bank accounts and at home)
  • Gold and silver (including jewelry)
  • Business inventory and trade goods
  • Investment properties (rental income)
  • Stocks, bonds, and mutual funds
  • Money owed to you (receivables)

The Eight Categories of Zakat Recipients

The Quran specifies eight categories of people who are eligible to receive Zakat (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60):

  1. Al-Fuqara (The Poor) — Those who lack basic necessities
  2. Al-Masakin (The Needy) — Those who have some income but not enough
  3. Amil Zakah (Zakat Administrators) — Those who collect and distribute Zakat
  4. Muallaf (New Muslims) — Those whose hearts are to be reconciled
  5. Ar-Riqab (Freeing Captives) — Those in bondage or slavery
  6. Al-Gharimin (Debtors) — Those overwhelmed by debt
  7. Fi Sabilillah (In the Path of Allah) — Those striving in the cause of Allah
  8. Ibn as-Sabil (The Wayfarer) — Stranded travelers in need

Zakat in Canada: Tax Benefits

When you pay your Zakat through a registered Canadian charity like Global Hope Giving, you receive an official tax receipt from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). This means your Zakat contribution is tax-deductible, effectively reducing the net cost of your obligation while ensuring your Zakat reaches those who need it most.
