Sadaqah and Zakat: Two Pillars of Islamic Generosity

In Islam, charitable giving is not just encouraged — it is central to the faith. Two of the most important forms of giving are Zakat and Sadaqah. While both involve helping others, they differ significantly in their requirements, calculation, and distribution.

What Is Zakat?

Zakat is the obligatory annual giving of 2.5% of qualifying wealth. It is the third pillar of Islam, required of every adult Muslim whose wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold. Zakat has strict rules about who can receive it — only the eight categories mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60).

What Is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is voluntary charity given at any time, in any amount, to anyone in need. There is no minimum or maximum amount, no specific time of year, and no restrictions on who can receive it. Sadaqah can be monetary, but it can also be a kind word, a smile, or removing harm from a path.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Every act of goodness is Sadaqah.” (Sahih Muslim)

Sadaqah Jariyah: The Gift That Keeps Giving

Sadaqah Jariyah is a special form of ongoing charity whose rewards continue even after the giver has passed away. Examples include building a well, funding a school, or planting a tree. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.” (Sahih Muslim)
